The Holy City of the Wichitas
The Holy City of the Wichitas is a 66-acre historic site within the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, created to reflect the architecture and setting of ancient Jerusalem.
Established in 1926 by Reverend Anthony Mark Wallock, the site began as the home of an outdoor Easter pageant that grew into one of Oklahoma’s most recognized traditions. The guide describes it as the nation’s longest-running Easter pageant, now more than a century old. The Holy City also hosts an annual Christmas story.
Constructed between 1934 and 1936 using native granite, the structures were built through the efforts of the Works Progress Administration (WPA) and the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The craftsmanship and design continue to define the site as a distinctive landmark shaped by history, purpose, and community vision.
Visitors are drawn to the Holy City for its blend of cultural significance and natural surroundings. Walkways connect a series of stone buildings, including a chapel, museum, and gathering spaces, all set against the backdrop of the Wichita Mountains.
Beyond its visual appeal, the Holy City holds cultural and historical significance for the region. It has served as a gathering place for decades, drawing visitors who come to explore, reflect, and experience a piece of living history.
Support & Donations
The Holy City is maintained through community support, volunteer efforts, and donations that help preserve the historic site for future generations. Contributions go toward upkeep, restoration, continued access to the grounds, and events such as the Easter Pageant.
